Marriage and women during the Tang period
In feudal China, women had no say at all in relation to their marriage partner, they were counted upon to accede unreservedly with their parents or brothers arrangements. Women had neither the right to divorce their husbands, nor to remarry. Regardless of whether a woman outlived her husband, she was allowed to marry only once in her lifetime. On the other hand, a husband could in accordance with the law abandon his wife if she committed one of the seven misdeeds and these were being unfaithful, infertile, lewd, envious, succumbed to a repugnant disease, interfering, or theft.
